How natural fibres actually work
Cotton and linen are both made of natural plant fibres, which means their structure is full of microscopic gaps. Those gaps let air move through the fabric and let moisture escape rather than sit against your skin. That's the entire mechanism behind why a cotton shirt feels cooler than a polyester one at the same temperature — it's not magic, it's airflow.
Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are made from plastic-based fibres. They don't have that same open structure, so sweat and heat get trapped closer to your body. In Indian summers, where humidity often matters more than raw temperature, that trapped moisture is what makes synthetic clothing feel clammy by midday.
Cotton: the everyday workhorse
Pure cotton is breathable, soft against the skin, and gets softer with every wash rather than losing shape. Linen: built for heat
Linen comes from the flax plant and has an even more open weave than cotton, which makes it the coolest natural fabric you can wear. It dries faster than cotton too, so it doesn't hold onto moisture the same way. The trade-off is that linen wrinkles easily and has a slightly stiffer hand-feel until it's been washed a few times. Cotton-linen blends are a common middle ground — you get some of linen's breathability with cotton's softer drape.
What actually happens to fabric in humidity
Humidity affects fabrics differently depending on how they're woven and what they're made of. Natural fibres like cotton and linen can absorb a meaningful amount of their own weight in moisture without feeling wet to the touch, then release that moisture into the air as it evaporates — this is what creates the cooling effect. Synthetic fibres, by contrast, absorb very little moisture themselves; instead, sweat sits on the surface of the fabric and against your skin, which is why synthetic clothing can feel clammy even in relatively short exposure to heat.
This is also why natural fabrics tend to smell less over the course of a hot day — trapped moisture on synthetic fibres is exactly the environment odour-causing bacteria thrive in, while moisture-wicking natural fibres don't hold onto sweat in the same way.
Why this matters beyond comfort
Natural fabrics also tend to be gentler on sensitive skin, since they don't trap heat and sweat the way synthetics can, which is often what triggers irritation in humid weather. They're also generally more breathable over repeated wear and washing, holding up better in India's climate than fast-fashion synthetic blends that pill or lose shape after a few months.
There's a durability angle too. Good-quality cotton and linen, cared for properly, genuinely last years rather than a season or two. Synthetic blends are often cheaper upfront but tend to show wear — pilling, static, colour fading from heat — much faster, which usually means replacing them more often.
